The internet was recently awash with cutesy stories about how Larry David was relieved to get uninvited from former President Obama’s 60th birthday party on Martha’s Vineyard, because he was afraid he would be asked to perform.
Now there’s another story about the comic floating around, and it’s ugly.
Page Six reports that David, co-creator the NBC sitcom “Seinfeld” and star of HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” screamed at noted Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz when the two encountered each other on the porch of a Martha’s Vineyard grocery store.
Dershowitz defended President Donald Trump during the 45th president’s first impeachment.
According to Page Six, the unnamed source who witnessed the event said that they “wrote it down to remember it.” Dershowitz later confirmed that the incident happened.
As relayed by Page Six, Dershowitz attempted to greet David, who shunned him by walking away. Dershowitz attempted to be friendly by saying that the two them could still talk, when David exploded.
“No. No. We really can’t,” David said. “I saw you. I saw you with your arm around [former Secretary of State] Pompeo! It’s disgusting!”
Dershowitz responded by saying that Pompeo was a former student of his, to which David reportedly said, “It’s disgusting. Your whole enclave – it’s disgusting. You’re disgusting.”
According to Page Six’s source, David walked away, at which point the law professor took off his t-shirt to reveal that he was wearing another t-shirt underneath with a message: “It’s the Constitution, Stupid!”
Dershowitz confirms story to Page Six
It’s hard to verify the accuracy of the quotes since they were relayed to Page Six by an unnamed source. But the media outlet said that Dershowitz confirmed the encounter took place. Dershowitz also said that he had once been friends with David.
According to Page Six, Dershowitz told the media outlet that David “screamed” and “yelled” at him. “I was worried that he was going to have a stroke,” Dershowitz said of the encounter.
“Larry is a knee-jerk radical,” Dershowitz said while talking about the interaction. “He takes his politics from Hollywood. He doesn’t read a lot. He doesn’t think a lot.”
Dershowitz also said that kind of thing is common on Martha’s Vineyard now. “People won’t talk to each other if they don’t agree with their politics.”
Dershowitz is a liberal who endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2008 presidential primary, and he voted for her in 2016 in the race against Trump. Dershowitz said he also supported President Obama, and that he voted for Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
Dershowitz has previously explained that he chose to defend President Trump, despite disagreeing with him politically, because the lawyer believes that the impeachment was unconstitutional. Dershowitz said he lost a lot a lot of friends because of doing that.
“That’s the price of principle,” he said.
Dershowitz also explained to Page Six that his wife had bought him the “It’s the Constitution, Stupid!” t-shirt because so many people do not understand why he chose to defend President Trump.
“It’s the Constitution, Stupid!” is a play off President Bill Clinton’s famous, “It’s the Economy, Stupid!” slogan from his 1992 presidential campaign.
Perhaps fittingly, Larry David wore a “Make America Great Again” hat in an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” to get out of social engagements, because he found that liberals would leave him alone when he put on the MAGA hat.
