And Jane Fonda apparently thinks the coronavirus pandemic is not all bad, because it can help get rid of President Trump.
Fonda was recorded in an Oct. 2 Zoom video call saying that “we can stop fascism” and that “we are people who can help determine which way humanity goes.” She then made this remarkable claim: “I just think um… Covid is God’s gift to the Left.”
“That’s a terrible thing to say,” the progressive actress then said with a laugh. (Fact check: True.)
“It was a very difficult thing to send down to us but it has ripped the Band-Aid off who he [Trump] is and what he stands for and what is being done to average people and working people in this country. We can see it now, people who couldn’t see it before, you know, they see it now, and we have a chance to harness that anger and make a difference.”
When people questioned whether Fonda really called the coronavirus pandemic a gift, Snopes verified that the quote was authentic, and correctly attributed, and taken in the proper context.
Her comment echoed a thematically similar comment made by Bill Maher, who said in 2018 that he hoped the economy would crash and the country would enter a recession so that people would get rid of Trump.
Fonda was born into a life of privilege; her parents were actor Henry Fonda and socialite Frances Ford Seymour. She later became famous starring in movies such as campy “Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy.”
An anti-war activist, she visited North Vietnam in 1972, where she was photographed sitting on an anti-aircraft gun used to shoot at American planes, which earned her the nickname “Hanoi Jane” and resulted in getting temporarily blacklisted from Hollywood. But she later went on to star in more movies, including “On Golden Pond” and “The China Syndrome.”
She was also known for her best-selling VHS workout videos and later marriage to billionaire Ted Turner.
Fonda currently stars in the Netflix comedy “Grace and Frankie.” She previously played Nancy Reagan in Lee Daniel’s “The Butler” (which also featured actor John Cusack as Richard Nixon) and starred in the movie “Monster in Law” with Jennifer Lopez.
